The undergraduate program “European Studies: History, Society, Culture” is an innovative initiative of the Hellenic Open University and contributes decisively to the modernization and renewal of the content of higher education in Greece. For the first time, a Greek university offers a comprehensive undergraduate program in European Studies with an emphasis on cultural issues in the broad scientific sense of the term. Other European programs that currently operate are mainly offered at the postgraduate level and are therefore considered more fragmented in terms of content and scope, or they focus primarily on foreign language studies. This program of the Hellenic Open University, which belongs to the School of Humanities, includes a wide combination of both established and emerging fields of knowledge and topics, aiming to approach the fundamental components and key processes that have historically shaped what is known as the European phenomenon. The main objectives of the program are: (a) to enrich students’ knowledge and skills, (b) to develop their critical thinking, (c) to enable them to understand contemporary European reality as citizens of Greece and Europe, (d) to help them recognize the importance of supranational processes, and (e) to present the formation of the multifaceted nature of the European phenomenon and culture that defines Europe’s current identity.
