Upon successful completion of the course “History of Law” at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, students acquire a comprehensive understanding of the historical development of law from antiquity to modern times. They become familiar with major legal systems, sources of law, and fundamental distinctions between public, private, and criminal law. Students are also introduced to political systems and judicial institutions in ancient Greece, Rome, and Byzantium, as well as to key concepts of private law, including contracts, property rights, and family law. The course highlights the evolution of legal thought and helps students understand that modern law is the result of a long historical process shaped by multiple civilizations. The aim is to provide a solid foundation for understanding contemporary legal systems and for further studies in law.
