Byzantine and Medieval World Master's
Master's
The new Interdepartmental Master’s Programme “Byzantine and Medieval World” is organized by the Department of History and Archaeology and the Department of Philology of the University of Crete and will begin in the Winter Semester of 2026.
Students choose among four specializations/directions:
1) Byzantine History
2) Medieval European History
3) Byzantine Archaeology and History of Byzantine Art
4) Byzantine Philology
The programme ensures, on the one hand, the opportunity for in-depth specialization in one of the four directions, and on the other hand, a comprehensive study of Byzantine and medieval culture as a unified whole. In this regard, the new Master’s programme is unique in Greece and one of the few internationally that aims for an interdisciplinary approach to the Eastern and Western Middle Ages. The Programme also innovates by incorporating courses (seminars and workshops) that provide knowledge and skills in both topics and methodologies that have been established for decades, as well as in subjects and methods at the cutting edge of the four specializations, with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinarity and the application of Artificial Intelligence to the Humanities.
Students are admitted twice a year. The number of admissions is set at 32 (thirty-two) per year, that is, 8 (eight) per specialization.
Graduates from Departments of History, History and Archaeology, Philology, Philosophy and Social Studies, Social Anthropology or Ethnology, as well as from Greek or recognized equivalent foreign universities offering programmes in Greek and European Culture, are eligible. Graduates of departments other than those specified above, from both domestic and foreign institutions, may be admitted on a case-by-case basis, following a relevant decision by the Programme Committee.
Courses are taught using a blended learning system, that is, a combination of in-person and synchronous distance learning, with up to 70% of ECTS credits and 70% of the teaching hours of each seminar or workshop conducted through distance learning.
